Sorry for the delay

For clarification, the meeting was initiated by Matt Crossman and Beth. An invitation was sent to Greg, Kim and I to attend a meeting with Matt and Beth to try to come up with ways to improve relations between Us and them.

We discussed the frustration with LM and decisions not being made and not kept. There is s huge mistrust factor towards management. Matt said they wanted us to work collaboratively towards improving working conditions. They wanted to be consistent and fair in managing the company. They promised to be quicker with their decisions. They said they would work with us.

Other topics discussed were Premier Shuttle- they are very concerned about Premier taking some of the transfers away from the company. A plan for Transfer vehicles is being developed. They are looking at a possibility of 18 to 20 vehicles, most of which would be within the existing ambulance services. They also recognized the need for a couple of bariatric units in NB.

The Promaster was discussed and management felt a need to address the members.

Notice of Interest for Station VPs

We are presently looking for representatives in all the stations. Your present Station Vice Presidents were elected 2 years ago and the By-laws of the CUPE Local 4848 suggest that we have an election every second year for the Station VP’s.

If you are interested in the opportunity to make a difference in the working conditions for you, your friends and your colleagues, this is a great challenge for you.

You will be responsible to:

  • File grievances
  • Bring forward concerns from your Members to your Executive
  • Meet with your OP’s Manager
  • Inform your Members
  • Hold Membership Meetings

You will also be invited to the Annual General Convention of Local 4848 and you will have the chance to run for Executive positions.

The election process:

1. You must be a member of the Local 4848 to submit your name.

2. You must submit your name, phone number and station name to your Regional President before July 29, 2016:

Enough Is Enough

logo 4848 100CUPE 4848 executive Board has been trying to work with SMUNBEMS management to better the working environment for all of our member for many years now. We have always taken the concerns of the members forward.

Over the last year the frustration has been building up due to the fact that little gets resolved and is instead left to be a follow-up and promised timelines are not kept.  Today your executive board abruptly walked out of labour management on the topic of vacation denials. As you are all aware we worked with management to extend the job postings over the summer on the premise to better accommodate vacation requests.

The executive has been made aware that despite the agreement being made that ALL vacancies are still being included in the vacation request scheduling. They are considering temporary positions due to language requirements, maternity leaves, WorkSafe NB leave and sick leave all as being vacancies.
The Executive was looking for confirmation from the Employer that these vacancies would not be include in the “formula” (3/8th in multi-truck stations/1/2 in single truck stations) when approving/denying vacations AND that they will approve vacations even if it meant paying someone overtime to cover the vacation. They did commit that OT  will be paid BUT that they cannot not look at those vacant positions when approving/denying vacations.

This is the issue that caused your Executive to walk out of the Labour/management  meeting today. As we walked out we dropped our buttons on the table.

SO……..we are asking that you send this info out to EVERY member that you can, via email and/or phone calls. The “enough” button campaign was launched today!

The speaking notes at this point is just “We have had enough of our vacations being denied because the Employer insists on counting the temp vacancies (caused mostly by the language plan) “!

We are still discussing other issues that we received via email (from only 4 members) and will be compiling a list and requesting advice from a marketing firm for speaking notes on these additional topics.

Dear Brothers and Sisters:

The Executive of CUPE Local 4848 would like to welcome you to the 9th Annual Convention for the Paramedics / Dispatchers Union. This year, the Convention will be held at the Delta Brunswick , Saint John on October 4th, 5th and 6th where a block of rooms has been held under CUPE 4848. You have to make your own reservations at (506) 648 1981 no later than September 1st.

It is important that members get the opportunity to come together every year to discuss the roles and functions of your union. That gives the membership a chance to meet other paramedics / dispatchers from different parts of the province to become acquainted with each other in a social setting rather than a working environment. Your elected station VP is your delegate and acts as your voice on station issues and the agenda for the Local.

Each station will be allowed to send the Station VP as a Delegate and all the Members of Local 4848 are welcomed to the Convention as Guests.

The agenda and registration form will follow.

Job Postings

For the past years, many members were not able to get their requested vacation. Several Operation Managers and some Regional Managers insisted on counting empty positions in the station as part of the formula used to determine the number of employees who could be placed on vacation on any one day. To correct this situation and to enable members to get their deserved vacations, CUPE 4848 asked ANB if they would consider extending the Temporary positions over 16 weeks instead of the normal 8. This would ensure that the ‘open’ shifts in July and August would be covered and now not a part of the formula. Vacations would be able to be granted.

Temporary positions are permanent positions requiring language proficiencies in both languages for which no qualified person applied. Therefore this would affect the permanent positions over the time period as well.

By doing this, the Executive felt this was a win-win situation for our members. Members would be able to get their requested vacation at a greater percentage and members in the temporary positions would have a set schedule for the months of July and August. New open shifts during this period would be equally distributed between qualified members until the next posting date of August 3, 2016.

Due to the postings having to be awarded early this week, this decision was made on Monday so CUPE 4848 was not able to inform the membership prior to the announcement made by ANB. The decision was done for the good of the membership.
